David Karabec

Director and founder of the IP Mediation Centre

I graduated from the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague in 1988, where I also received a doctorate in law. Since the beginning of 1990, I have been involved in counseling budding entrepreneurs within the Czechoslovak Entrepreneurs Association. After that, I briefly worked in a consulting firm focused on providing legal and economic services for entrepreneurs, and in 1993 I became a commercial lawyer registered with the Chamber of Commercial Lawyers of the Czech Republic. I have been working as a lawyer since 1996. Since 1997, I have been publishing and lecturing, focusing on industrial rights and licenses in business, know-how protection and economic competition, while constantly deepening my professional knowledge in this area. In 2019, I obtained an MPA management degree in research, development and innovation.

In 1999, I completed a three-month professional internship in the Germany for lawyers of Central and Eastern Europe, focused on the application of German and European Union law. In 1999, I completed a two-year specialized study of intellectual property rights at the IP Training Institute of the Industrial Property Office in Prague. In 2002, as part of the ČAK educational program, I took part in a study trip to the Commercial Court in Vienna and the International Court of Arbitration in Vienna. In 2003, I completed a one-week study program in France at the European Court of Human Rights and at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, focusing on the court's decision-making practice and the enforceability of its decisions. In 2003, I took part in a study trip to the  Administrative Court based in Leipzig focused on issues of European law in relation to administrative justice. In the years 2004 - 2012, I worked as an assistant professor at the law department of the Banking Institute of the University of Prague (BIVŠ), where I specialized in the issue of industrial rights and licenses. From 2005 to 2017 I was a member of the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce in Prague. I have been actively cooperating with the Czech Bar Association since 1999, where I worked in the section for EU law, international law and international relations in the years 1999-2008, while in 2005-2006 I worked as an expert of the Czech Bar Association in the Commission for Competition Law CCBE in Brussels. In 2018, I became a member of the Intellectual Property Section.

In 2017, I initiated the establishment of the family consulting, advisory and educational company JUDr. David KARABEC, s.r.o., in whose activities I participate as a manager and professional guarantor of educational courses. The company is the operator of its own Intellectual Property Protection Training Center, in which we focus on training employees of small and medium-sized enterprises, universities and research institutes in the field of copyright and industrial rights protection, know-how, trade secrets, licenses and unfair competition.

In 2019, I completed the two-year specialization Master of public administration in the field of research, development and innovation (MPA VVI) and in the same year I became a member of the prestigious Czech Association of Inventors and Improvers. In 2021, I completed my postgraduate studies (LL.M.) in the field of alternative dispute resolution (out-of-court dispute resolution, mediation, arbitration), completed specialized mediation and negotiation courses for patent attorneys, and became the vice-chairman of the editorial board of the Industrial Property magazine. In 2022, I became a member of the legislative council of the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises and Entrepreneurs of the Czech Republic. In my professional legal practice, I mainly deal with issues of industrial and copyright rights, licenses, protection of know-how and trade secrets, unfair competition, IP mediations and procedural representation of clients in these areas of law.

I am also the founder of the IP Mediation Center in Prague, a registered institute that, from 2021, actively promotes alternative dispute resolution (ADR) options in the field of intellectual property protection, conducts training of specialized mediators in this area, promotes mediation in the field of science, research and innovation and between small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as gathers knowledge support from WIPO, EUIPO and ÚPV in the field of alternative dispute resolution.

In my free time, I like to spend time with my family, with whom we take trips to nature, but also cycling, swimming, skiing and golf.
